“Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD” (Exodus 14:13, ESV).

If you grew up with Uncle Arthur’s Bible stories, you remember the Exodus: the Israelites, in full-page color, marching through the Red Sea, flanked by towering walls of blue water. Next to Calvary, their dramatic rescue from slavery and the clutches of Pharaoh is the most pivotal moment in salvation history. Legends are often larger than reality, but not in this case. This is the scintillating tale of a God whose “hand is not shortened, that it cannot save” (Isaiah 59:1, ESV).

The Exodus shows that we serve a God who cares, who delivers, and who comes near His children. There are no gods besides Him. When the future is dim and failure is imminent, God acts in a miraculous way. The problems of life are no match for Him. No odds are insurmountable.

In Exodus, Jiří Moskala explores these grand themes of deliverance and redemption in the biblical book of Exodus. He notes that we, like the children of Israel, face an impassable “Red Sea.” It is called the grave, and there is no way around it, no way through it. But the tomb, just like that sea, is subject to the power of God and will soon be split wide open.

When this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality,

then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

“O Death, where is your sting?

O Hades, where is your victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:54, 55, NKJV).
