Description / Dangers of Contemplative Prayer

What’s all the buzz about “Contemplative Prayer”?

Sooner or later, almost everyone wants to get closer to God. This impulse seems to be part of our instinctive human makeup. We find it in the mystics among the Hindus and Buddhists, and in the Sufis among the Muslims.  This natural desire exists among Catholic monks and nuns and Jewish rabbis. Even hardcore atheists and everyday doubters – underneath it all and in their quiet times of reflection – feel an indescribable longing to draw close to the Supreme Being.

So what could possibly be wrong with spending quiet time, emptying your mind, and listening for the voice of God?

So many parts of Spiritual Formation and contemplative prayer sound good – maybe even familiar. Satan is delighted that his age-old seductive weapon of spiritualism is now seeping into our churches.  In these pages, you will learn to see more clearly the threads of satanic charm that have fascinated men and women for centuries and, by God’s grace  you’ll be warned against them.

Howard Peths book is vital and loving counsel to warn us; from marching down a popular but deadly road.

Aaron Muth is producing a documentary on Spiritual Formation. It is not completed yet, but this "trailer" includes John Bradshaw, Herb Douglass, Howard Peth, Rick Howard, Derek Morris, Doug Batchelor speaking out against SF and Contemplative Prayer Dangers!!!

They with Howard Peth, share the same concerns and warnings for the present times we are living in. See video link below:

This is an excellent intro to know a bit of this danger.

I once used a video of a very well known preacher of the Emergent Movement (I'll just name his initials, R.B.), in a youth reunion at my church; I did not know it at the time but the person was incorporating elements that attract to the occult mystic system of prayer... and it all seemed so right to us. It was a beautiful message, I tell you.

Then, I read this small book in a week... and I remembered some phrases spoken by R.B. in the video. It was a wake-up call. Reading this book makes a big difference in discernment of these things that the devil is disguising as "Christian practices".

Who am I to recommend this book? No one, but still, I recommend it.

Every professed Christian must read this book.

When you realize how deceptive Satan is you can realize that he has full advantage when he convinces you to empty your mind to get close to God. Jesus did not teach us to empty our mind before we could communicate with Him. His Holy Word is His way to communicate with us and we cannot do that with an empty mind.

This book offers insight into a truly slippery slope. I starting reading it while visiting a Buddhist country and the things he was saying, I was seeing with my very own eyes day after day in the monasteries we visited. It's an easy read that is well worth the time to open your mind and understand one of the devices the devil uses to trick people.

This is a work of polemic not scholarship. I am disappointed that Pacific Press published such a poor piece of writing and that Adventist Book Center's are selling it. Unfortunately, Peth's work does not offer a thoughtful and Biblical assessment of the wide range of prayer practices that fall under the heading of contemplative prayer. Instead his book serves as a fine example of the straw man argument. An equivalent work would be if someone were to claim that because Hitler practiced vegetarianism then it is obviously an evil practice and thus Adventists should not be vegetarian! Such is the logical reason of this book!
