Infantry men who once ridiculed and scoffed at Desmond’s simple faith and refusal to carry a weapon owed their lives to him. In the midst of a fierce firefight on Okinawa that felled approximately 75 men from the 1st Battalion, Private Doss refused to seek cover and carried his stricken comrades to safety one by one. This and other heroic acts earned him the highest honor America can bestow on one of her sons—the Medal of Honor.

But his story doesn’t end in 1945. There have been many other battles and victories for the man known as “the unlikeliest hero,” and this book tells those stories.

From an accident-prone childhood to World War II gallantry, the tragic loss of his first wife, Dorothy, and his battles with deafness and cancer, Desmond Doss has lived a life of unsurpassed devotion. Devotion to his country, his convictions, and his God.

Desmond Doss Conscientious Objector
Review by
Frances Doss is Desmond's second wife. During World War II Desmond was married to his first wife and after the war Desmond and the first Mrs. Doss had a son. Desmond's story is not all happy. From his war wounds He was 100% disabled. He had TB in both his lungs and had to have one removed. He tried to work but could not. When the Army classifies you as a hundred percent disabled you are. Mrs. Doss a nurse, went back to school to be a teacher so that she could care for their son. Desmond has allowed no Hollywood movies made of his war time heroism. Offers were made but he declined. THe movie he allowed made is a documentary of his wife and that was at the end of his life. Desmond Doss was an amazing man of God.
