Durante muitos anos, os adventistas do sétimo dia têm-se demonstrado relutantes em formalizar um credo, no sentido usual da palavra. Entretanto, de tempos em tempos - tendo em vista propósitos prácticos-, temos constatado a necessidade de resumir nossas crenças em uma estrutura organizada.

Em 1872, a editora adventista de Battle Creek, Michigan, publicou uma "sinopse de nossa fé" em 25 proposições. Esse documento, tendo recebido rápidas revisões e sido ampliado para 28 seções, apareceu no Yearbook denominacional de 1889.
